Samuel De Champlain

Samuel De Champlain was a French explorer who discovered the city of Quebec. He was also the first European to discover the lake that is now named after him. Samuel was born in 1567 at Brouage, France. As a boy, he learned how to navigate ships from his father. Samuel's father, Anthoine De Champlain, was a sea captain in a merchant marine. Once in a while Samuel would join his father and travel with him on several voyages.

To become an explorer, Samuel had to learn how to navigate ships and he had to become an accomplished mapmaker. He also had to prove to himself if he was able to succeed on being a true leader. In 1598, Samuel joined his uncle for his first genuine voyage. During the voyage Samuel was given the opportunity to take command of a ship and prove he was able to become a true leader. In January, 1599, Samuel set sail on his first transatlantic journey. During this trip, he wrote a book calld "Narrative of a Voyage to the West Indies and Mexico in the Years." King Henry was so impressed by the maps inside the book taht he made Samuel an official position; Samuel, the royal mapmaker.

It is really hard to count up how many voyages Samuel went on. I believe he went on six diffrent voyages. His first voyage was to spain with his uncle. The second voyage he went on was to Tadoussac. His third voyage was to what is now called the city of Quebec. The fourth voyage was to a river which is now named aftwer him, Lake Champlain. His Fifth voyage was to North America. And the sixth voyage he went on was to canada. On every single voyage Samuel went on, he came back successfully reaching his destination.

In terms of sailing, Samuel's voyages were not taht bad. The weather was pretty good for most of the time he was out at sea. Once in a while a storm would pass by but they would never be that severe. On all six voyages Samuel went on, he never met up with anyone except the Native Americans. The Native Americans surprisingly didn't cause any harm to Samuel while he was on his voyage. Also during the voyages Samuel didn't find any resources at all.

During his uncle's voyage, Samuel had to learn the Spanish language in order to communicate well to the Spanish people that were sailing on the boat with him. Like everyone else, it was very frustrating for Samuel to learn a second language. Whenever he tried speaking it to the Spanish people, they would either ignore him because they didn't understand what he was saying or laugh at him because he was saying it the wrong way. It was the same with the Native Americans.

All of Samuel's voyages were successful andhe reached every single destination he wanted to reach. All of the voyages were a complete success for Samuel. He accomplished his dreams on becoming a French explorer, a navigator, and a mapmaker. He discovered locations that other explorers didn't even know existed. Samuel De Champlain is and inspiration to many explorers now. He is a unique explorer which gave me such an honor to be the only student in my gruop to research about him.
